Department History
In 1966, the Board of Supervisors hired the very first paid professional as the Recreation Program Coordinator. The duties establishing recreational activities to meet the needs of the residents and to act as a liaison to Township staff and the RAC. Now, 52 years later, the Parks & Recreation Department employs a Parks & Recreation Manager, Recreation Program Coordinator, a part-time Recreation Assistant, Summer Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director, Camp Counselors, and a Junior Counselor. On occasion, the Department offers a 10-14 week internship in the summer to help with special events, research, outdoor programs, and summer camp. Various contract instructors provide recreation programs to the community.
Recreation Advisory Council
Silver Spring Township first organized a Recreation Advisory Council (RAC) in the 1970's, with 5 volunteer members. In the early 1980's membership was on the decline and the group disbanded until 1988, when the Board reinstated RAC. With the growing demand for recreation programs and facilities, membership has been steady for the last 30 years, and membership has increased to 7 volunteers.
